I think I missed June’s REWL’s because literally how is it even July 18th right now?? 2023 clearly has places to go and people to see.
Before I dive in, this is your reminder that we’re going to Lisbon, Portugal in Spring 2024!! I’ve partnered with TrovaTrip to host a group trip, and YOU can join!! So if you didn’t already drop your email at this link, do that now! That way when the trip goes live, you’ll be first to get notified about it and can book with the early bird pricing! I’ll have more details to come on final pricing (not including flight) and the itinerary, but the trip will be 6-7 days, and hotels, activities, and most of the meals are covered in the cost. There will be some downtime too because I am old and require downtime.
Add your email here to get notified when the trip goes live with full details!
Hope to see you there!! Onto the REWL’s:
Reading
Daisy Jones & The Six - before you rip me a new one, I didn’t watch the show yet because I wanted to read the book first and I’m just getting to it now. Let me live! So far it’s very good, and it’s written by Taylor Jenkins Reid. And ladies, if you haven’t read The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, I highly recommend it (buy here on Amazon). It’s not YA but it’s just definitely a girl book and a great summer beach read!
Eating
Central Park Boathouse - I’ll be sharing more photos or a vid on IG about this, but the iconic Boathouse is reopening! Currently only the cafe is open with outdoor seating (8 am - 7 pm), and the actual restaurant will be opening later this year (hopefully). In the meantime, I had to spread the word about the lobster roll because it was GREAT. Big chunks of lobster on top, smaller more manageable bites underneath on a nice, thick Texas toast-style bun. Served with thick cut crispy chips and aioli for dipping. YUM. You can rent a boat just a few steps away, too! It’s a rowboat though, so maybe eat after. Work up that appetite. Either way, don’t sleep on this one!
Emilio’s Ballato - a classic NYC Italian institution since 1959, which has turned into somewhat of a celeb hotspot. If you want to get in, you have to go early. There is usually a line, but I am not ashamed to admit that I used my connections with the chef to get in quicker. I’m sorry but I got paid in food not dollars for a good portion of this career, I’m allowed to enjoy some perks. We had the veal chop parm w vodka sauce aka “Veal Antonio” - an off the menu item that they usually serve as a special - baked clams, and evidently they now have Neopolitan style pizza, too! YERMMM.
Nura - I had brunch at this Indian-accented/New American mashup a few weeks ago, and it was wonderful. The decor/space is big, bright, and airy with lots of greenery (it is in GREENpoint after all…I’ll stop), and the service was super friendly.
I had the BEC (Jaggery Bacon, Steamed Egg, Cheddar, Aji Amarillo Aioli, Arugula) and my friend had the Butter Chicken Sausage (The Meat Hook Butter Chicken Sausage, Two Fried Eggs, Braised Collards, Hollandaise, Daal). Loved both of these, but my gripe with a “steamed egg” on a sandwich is that it slides off the bun every time you take a bite. It’s a lot of management for a sandwich. Otherwise, highly recommend!
Pink Taco - I got invited to a “Barbie Brunch” here and…idk about you but I’m not saying no to that. I have never been to Pink Taco before and I gotta say, really happy with the churro pancakes! I even got to take home a Barbie!! So cute. I’ll have to come back and try the actual tacos but for brunch near Times Square, I enjoyed it.
all’Antico Vinaio - the bread on these sandwiches are somewhat life-changing. I don’t mean to be dramatic, but just trust me on this. They’re also big enough to feed two people, so don’t cry about the price. I promise it’s worth it. I tend to get the La Summer, which is fresh mozz, prosciutto, tomato, and basil. It’s perfect every damn time and usually my go to if I’m heading to a Broadway show. To that end…
Watching
The Cottage on Broadway - this play was GREAT! I loved it. I am a musical gal 9 times out of 10, so when I tell you that I thoroughly enjoyed this play and it went by FAST, that means it was worth it. Directed by Jason Alexander (he prob hates this but “aka George from Seinfeld”), starring Eric McCormack, Laura Bell Bundy, Alex Moffat, and Lilli Cooper. It was charming and funny with a lot of twists, which kept my attention from start to finish. And this may be an odd thing to point out but great use of props. It’s only running for 6 weeks, so if you have the chance, GO!
Asi Wind’s Inner Circle - this is a magic show, but it is SO GOOD. Asi Wind is not only a captivating magician, but he’s charming and funny as hell. Incredible comedic timing. I was taken here on a date a few weeks ago, and even though the date didn’t end up working out, he still got major points for this one. I’ve been recommending it to everyone I know, and that includes you fine people. I was blown away by the magic tricks and laughing the whole time. If you can, get seats at “the inner circle” (that’s where I was). GET YOUR TIX HERE!
Bad Sisters - I binged this show on AppleTV+ in 1.5 days lol CANNOT RECOMMEND IT ENOUGH. I can’t even really tell you much without giving away the plot, but let’s just say it’s a dark comedy/dramedy and each episode leaves you desperately wanting to know what happens next. It’s also a good female empowerment show, if you need some of that energy in your life. Who doesn’t?
Silence of the Lambs - I posted on Threads last week: “what’s a movie you’ve never seen that people constantly give you shit for?” Welp, this is mine! Never seen it, at least not fully from start to finish. I don’t love horror movies and don’t handle gore well, but older movies tend to be less realistic (usually), so I powered through it. Good acting, twisted…but overall I don’t get the big deal lol. I know it’s a classic, but I don’t think I would watch it ever again. Once was enough. As long as I know all the cultural references and GIF’s - I’m good.
Listening
The Rewatchables - one of my favorite movie podcasts just released a new episode about one of my favorite movies: My Cousin Vinny!! If you’re into film like I am, you’ll love this pod. Super fun format and easy to listen to. I heart Bill Simmons.
That’s all for now. TOODLES, MISFITS!
Nice! Thanx!
